It has been almost two years since I stopped blogging. My experience with the blog as a medium largely parallels the majority of would-be bloggers: out of the estimated 133 million blogs on the internet, about 125.6 million are abandoned. In hindsight, the decision to stop blogging was somewhat rash, the result of not enough time and a fear of alienating myself given my high PageRank on Google (type in “pete gilligan” and up comes my blog!). While its regrettable that I have lost the opportunity to have the last two years of my life and thoughts documented, its invigorating to have the chance to start fresh.

But first, an abbreviated background. One of the biggest mistakes I made in taking down my blog was the loss of a rapidly growing readership. I saw hits to my blog explode as I documented my application process to Brown University, where I eventually was accepted and am now a senior nearing graduation. My emotional and sometimes way-to-honest posts got me noticed by both The Brown Daily Herald and the Brown Alumni Magazine. (By the way, for a really embarrassing quote, see the end of the Brown Daily Herald article; my mom had told me before the phone interview to be gracious - that’s what came out.)

Always the nerd, I have put together various websites since elementary school. (Yeah, I’m that cool.) My first experience with blogging came in the form of a now-defunct, but fantastic piece of software called Greymatter in high school. I moved on to LiveJournal for some reason, then to a blog hosted at the University of Minnesota, and finally to my own installation of MovableType.

Near the end of 2004, I began posting almost daily about my daily life, college application process, politics, culture, and anything else. I eventually saw my blog fade out as I began my freshman year, though I did briefly resurrect it the following summer on WordPress, the fantastic software I’m using now. Many of these old posts have been saved in one form or another in a slew of somewhat difficult to translate backups, so I look forward to perhaps dropping a few in here or there for fun.

So, we return to today. As you can see, I’ve resolved to restart my presence in the blogosphere. My goal will not be a daily posting routine; instead, I will be putting out a high-quality article once or twice a week. My focus will be a combination of personal writing, how-tos, and commentary on politics, technology, consumerism, and culture. I’m going to make a conscious effort to stay away from language or content that I might regret later on - and keep employer-related matters off the table. While I’ve considered trying an anonymous blog to give myself free-range, it seems to be ineffective at concealing yourself and makes it difficult to come across as open and honest to a readership (that I hope to eventually rebuild, since I know nobody is reading this right now!).
